Fall Layering 101

Fall is the most exciting season in fashion, and it’s finally here! With that said, here are some tips on how to bundle up and look polished and fabulous all at the same time thanks to the magic of fall layering.

The trick to perfect fall fashion is to layer. For proper fall layering, start by picking apart your closet for all your staple pieces: tank tops, chunky knit sweaters, leggings, and dresses. Mix and match your staple pieces and examine the way they fit together. Try on as many different combinations until you find one that is comfortable and looks good to you! Remember to start with your basics; these could include a loose-fitting short sleeve dress, well-worn cut-offs with a comfy shirt, or a skirt with a sweater. The purpose of picking your basics is to find a piece that you are comfortable with wearing by itself and that you can also keep adding pieces to — hence, layering! Your core pieces should always be something that you are comfortable with wearing as a stand-alone outfit. That way, if you get hot throughout the day, you can shed a few items and still feel completely stylish.

Once you have your staple pieces, pick great accessories that will work as add-ons. Whether it’s a great vest, peacoat, blazer, or scarf, these pieces will keep you warm and will complete your fashion forward ensemble for the fall.

One of my favorite layering duos is black transparent tights and socks. The tights offer just enough coverage to keep you warm, and they are breathable enough to wear during the warmer parts of the day. On a colder day, adding socks gives you added warmth, and they look super cute when peeking out of combat boots or heeled booties. You can pair these tights with a courduroy skirt, a leather dress, or a button-down shirt dress. They are a great way to instantly elongate your silhouette.

Another great layering must-have is lightweight knits. They are a go-to for fall, and you can never have too many! Button-down cardigans and slouchy boyfriend sweaters are perfect for those colder days. Layer them over tanks or with a white tee and distressed denim for a more casual ensemble.

Fall is the season to bundle up and have some fun mixing and matching your wardrobe! Don’t get left in the cold by forgetting to layer. It’s the only way to stay warm and look super chic.
