Raid by Ashley Ward

The following is a featured 100-word story from the December Writing Challenge.

“Evacuate!” An electronic voice pierced the air. “Last ship leaves in 5 minutes! ”

People ran. The aliens were coming.

Caroline stumbled as she fought against the crowd — back to the only home she had ever known. The daisy in her hand rapidly lost petals due to the roaring winds. She fell upon the headstone of her sister’s grave.

Above her, silver spacecrafts dotted the orange sky, like balloons escaping from the earth. “A final goodbye,” she whispered, pressing the broken flower into the moist soil.

The last of the spaceships rose, disappearing into an abyss of stars and darkness.
