Brown University was called the College of Rhode Island until Nicholas Brown donated $5,000 to the school in 1804. To figure out how much money that was, remember that college tuition was only $5 at the time!

 

2. It Wasn’t Just Named after Her

While the Annmary Brown Library may resemble a tomb since it has no windows, it is suspected to actually be a tomb as well. This library at Brown University is said to be the burial spot of Rush Hawkins and Annmary Brown Hawkins. Their graves can be viewed through a grate at the library.

 

3. Gather Around the Organ 

Brown University is the home of the largest remaining Hutchings-Votey organ. Every year on Halloween, students from Brown University and people from the surrounding community will gather around the organ to hear spooky music played. They gather again around Christmas for holiday concerts performed by different musical groups around campus.

 

4. From Harry Potter to Brown University

The famous movie star Emma Watson, mostly known for her role as Hermione in the Harry Potter series, is one of Brown’s most famous alumni. She graduated with an English degree in 2014.

 

5. Open the Gates!

The Van Wickle gates at Brown University are only opened twice a year. They are opened for Convocation and Commencement. According to legend, any student who goes through the gates at any other time will be cursed!
