In the spirit of the fall season and the rapid approach of October 31st, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to round up some of the best horror films streaming on Netflix right now. So grab the popcorn, some friends, and turn off the lights — if you dare.

  1. Cabin in the Woods, 2011 (R)

This is not your typical murder in the woods movie — it takes a very unexpected turn at the end that is cringe worthy and fantastically scary. I have to say this is one of my personal favorites, and I recommend it highly.

Rotten Tomatoes Critics Consensus:

“The Cabin in the Woods is an astonishing meta-feat, capable of being funny, strange, and scary — frequently all at the same time.”

Netflix Rating: 3.7 out of 5 stars                 Rotten Tomatoes: 91%

  1. Rosemary’s Baby, 1968 (R)

For those who are into a psychological scare, this film is for you. While there is very little visible violence or gore, the storyline of the movie is frightening enough in itself. With eerie shot composition and cinematic elements, you will no doubt have an uneasy experience watching this — especially the end.

Rotten Tomatoes Critics Consensus:

“A frightening tale of Satanism and pregnancy that is even more disturbing than it sounds thanks to convincing and committed performances by Mia Farrow and Ruth Gordon.”

Netflix Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars                 Rotten Tomatoes: 98%

  1. The Silence of the Lambs, 1991 (R)

This movie is a classic cult film that teeters on the line of crime drama and horror. It won multiple Oscars the year it was released and features exceptional performances from the leading actors. You’re used to seeing detectives and agents get into the minds of a killer, but what happens when the killer is the one doing the manipulating?

Rotten Tomatoes Critics Consensus:

“Director Jonathan Demme’s smart, taut thriller teeters on the edge between psychological study and all-out horror, and benefits greatly from stellar performances by Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster.”

Netflix Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars                 Rotten Tomatoes: 94%

4. Carrie, 1976 (R)

Don’t even bother looking up the remakes; I guarantee it will be nothing close to the original. Sure, it may be a bit out-dated in the special effects department, but overall this is a classic not to be missed. Based on a Stephen King novel, we see the result of being the outcast and possessing dark supernatural powers; it’s not pretty, but it’s drippingly terrifying. Did I mention this is John Travolta’s first major motion picture?

Rotten Tomatoes Critics Consensus:

“Carrie is a horrifying look at supernatural powers, high school cruelty, and teen angst — and it brings us one of the most memorable and disturbing prom scenes in history.”

Netflix Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars                 Rotten Tomatoes: 92%

  1. You’re Next, 2013 (R)

This film can be most closely related to The Strangers since it is a home-invasion horror movie featuring masked, ax-wielding murderers that crash an innocent family reunion. I have yet to watch this one; however, Rotten Tomatoes says that this film is a “fresh twist on home-invasion horror.”

Rotten Tomatoes Critics Consensus:

“You’re Next’s energetic and effective mix of brutal gore and pitch black humor will please horror buffs and beyond.”

Netflix Rating: 3.6 out of 5 stars                 Rotten Tomatoes: 74%
