Welcome, Germies, to this month’s writing challenge! This challenge will begin today and will end July 31st. However, you are welcome to come back anytime to complete the challenge and submit it below in the comments section. We will pick a few of our favorites that are submitted during this month, though, and they will be featured in our Lit section.

Write a short story based off of this picture by Cassoday Harder. There is no limit to how short it can be, but keep it no longer than 1,500 words.

Here’s a mini brainstorming session to help you get those creative juices flowing:

Is the girl living or working on a ranch for the summer? Does she just live on a farm year-round? Is the stable abandoned? Does she love horses, or does she want to get away from a small town? What’s she doing there? Is she waiting to secretly rendezvous with someone, or is she trying to get away to have some time for herself? What’s her name? What’s her story? Is this story even about her? Is there another protagonist altogether?

Don’t be afraid to get creative!
